Rays of Hope for Haiti and the Medical Donation Resource Center January Workbee Tops 128 Volunteers!

January, 2012 Grand Rapids, MI- Volunteers from around West Michigan converged on the Rays of Hope for Haiti warehouse located at 446 Grandville Ave, SW for the first volunteer workbee of 2012.  The overwhelming response of volunteers enabled Rays of Hope and the Medical Donation Resource Center to organize, stock and pack supplies to assist ongoing programs, mostly medical relief programs in developing nations such as Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Burkina Faso, and many others.

Most notably attending were various groups from the Grand Rapids community including: Grand Valley State University, Black Leaders Aspiring for Critical Knowledge, New Hope Lutheran Church, West Catholic Hockey TeamSteepletown Ministries, and volunteers from Spectrum Hospital as well as the Spectrum/ Blodgett campus.

"This is an incredible outpouring of support," stated Betty Grinzel, volunteer director for the Medical Donation Resource Center.  "The time and dedication shown by these volunteers translates into so much immediate assistance for the people (worldwide) served by our Medical Donation Center."

The entire volunteer group was treated to a wonderful Haiti meal prepared and donated by Chez Olga Restaurant located in Eastown.

Rays of Hope for Haiti and the Rays of Hope Medical Donation Resource Center offers monthly volunteer opportunities.  Anyone is welcome to attend the Saturday Workbee.  The next Saturday Workbee well be held on Saturday, March 17, from 10am to 1pm.

Volunteer Workbee Saturdays!

What’s all the buzz?

Volunteer Workbee Saturdays are a true hit!
Join the Rays of Hope for Haiti team one Saturday per month for a volunteer workbee sure to bring hope and help to others and a true sense or encouragement and unity to yourself!
The VOLUNTEER WORKBEES bring together volunteers to our warehouse facility in Grand Rapids to help sort, pack, and shelve supplies for the people of Haiti, and worldwide.
Thanks to the benevolent generosity of Spectrum Health Services, and St. Mary’s Health Care, as well and many area medical systems and local doctors, Rays of Hope for Haiti receives quality medical supplies which are used to help people in 3rd world countries, and even to help lower income individuals living in need in Michigan! All these donated medical supplies, even though they are in perfect condition and non-expired would have ended up in a landfill, had it not been for the forethought of keen individuals at these medical facilities who decided to partner with Rays of Hope.
In turn, we developed the Medical Donation Resource Center (MDRC). The MDRC provides medical supplies for doctors, nurses, hospitals, clinics, medical missions and medical programs worldwide, and even here in Grand Rapids, MI!
Nurse Director, Betty Grinzel states that the “Volunteer Workbees demonstrate the true kindness of our West Michigan community as so many come out to help and participate in such a worthy cause”. She adds, “In a very real sense these volunteers are really giving of themselves and a part of them goes onto the hospitals and clinics around the world, because it was their caring hands that touched these supplies and helped make them ready for others”.
Can I be a part of the Saturday Volunteer Workbee even if I am not a medical professional?
Absolutely- WE NEED YOU! Betty has organized the workbees so that everyone is involved. Knowledge of medical items is very helpful, however if you do not have familiarity with medical supplies, no problem! You will be working side by side with someone who is knowledgeable!
Will the Saturday Volunteer Workbee take all day?
No, in fact we begin at 10am and finish at 1pm. We work until 12:30, then Olga Benoit, Rays of Hope for Haiti board member and owner of Chez Olga, Grand Rapids premier Haitian themed restaurant caters a wonderful lunch for the entire group of volunteers! You will not want to miss this great meal of authentic Haitian cuisine.
How old do you have to be to volunteer?
Because we are an active warehouse facility children (12 and under) must be accompanied by parent or guardian. Youth groups should have adequate adult leadership to help provide direction and support to youth attending.
I have a really large group that wants to come on the Volunteer Saturday Workbee!
Great, we welcome large groups and will acknowledge your group during our gathering time before lunch! We are limited to the amount of people at one time in the warehouse so if you are bringing a group please be sure to tell us in advance. You can contact Kim at 616.318.7378.
What if I or my group cannot make the Volunteer Saturday Workbee?
We have other options. In fact, can you help us plan a workbee with your group on another day? Rays of Hope often welcomes groups for their own dedicated workbee day! This event mirrors the regular Saturday Volunteer Workbees; however it is set up for your group only. It is a great bridge-building and team event for your group. Lunch is provided and we only work on a specific project, pre-determined by you and Rays of Hope. If interested in having a dedicated workbee at the warehouse contact Kim at 616.318.7378.
